A constituent institution of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Kasturba Medical College Mangalore founded in the year 1955, utilizing the clinical facilities of the Government Lady Goschen Hospital and Government Wenlock Hospital. In the year 1961, the pre-clinical section was also started in Mangalore city.
KMC Mangalore became independent in the year 1977. In addition to the two Government hospitals, there is also a teaching hospital which is attached to the College viz., the KMC Hospital, Attavar and it is established in the year 1992 with a bed strength of 500 patients. Having international standards infrastructure facilities, the medical college has seven big air-conditioned lecture halls that are fitted with modern audio-visual teaching aids. All the teaching rooms are equipped with multi-media projectors. There is a fully air-conditioned library with a seating capacity of approximately 500 with internet facility. The college library has more than 10,000 books.
In addition to the Departments of Anatomy, Physiology & Biochemistry, there are two lecture halls with a capacity of 250 each. Both boys’ and girls’ hostels are based within the basic sciences complex. The KMC, Mangalore offers hostel accommodation to its students in a total of nine hostels and out of these 5 are ladies hostels. In addition to this, there is also a Medical Education Unit that conducts an annual orientation program for interns, students, and postgraduates. This unit also provides various resource materials for the teaching members of the faculty.
With the first graduating class of Kasturba Medical College Mangalore, The Medical Council of India granted recognition in the year 1958. Also, the educational institute is recognized by the Malaysian Medical Council and the General Medical Council of Great Britain. Various new programs, student amenities, and faculty research have steadily created over the years.
The first medical college to be created as a private partnership model in medical education and health care delivery Mangalore and it ranks among the top medical colleges in India today. This medical college in Mangalore has won many laurels including the highest ICMR STS awards in India. The Kasturba Medical College Mangalore is recognized as one among 20 International Medical Institutes by the ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Graduates) for the electronic credentials verification program. In addition to this, students from 45 countries have graduated from this medical college and the degrees have been recognized all across the world.
